Discover how the Humphrey Hiuhu Foundation is partnering with Happy Mercy Center to provide food, education, and polytechnic tuition to vulnerable children in Kenya. Read our latest project update.
A heartfelt thank you to our incredible community of supporters! Because of your unwavering encouragement and generosity over the past year, we have achieved something truly beautiful together.
Through your financial gifts, the Humphrey Hiuhu Foundation was able to consistently support the children at Happy Mercy Center (formerly known as Gladways Rescue Center) in Kenya, providing life-sustaining food and clean water every single month.
Here is a closer look at what your generosity accomplished, and the exciting new goals we are stepping out in faith to achieve this year.
The Reality for Single-Parent Households in Kenya
Most of the children residing at Happy Mercy Center come from vulnerable, single-parent households—overwhelmingly led by resilient single mothers who face extreme economic hardships. Due to absolute poverty, many of these families are simply unable to secure daily basic needs like food, clean water, and shelter.
That is where the incredible work of the center comes in. Under the compassionate leadership of Director Mary, Happy Mercy Center provides a safe, nurturing environment where these children are housed, fed, and enrolled in school.
Crucially, the center doesn’t replace families; it supports them. The children maintain strong emotional bonds by visiting their mothers and families as much as they can throughout the year, keeping their family units intact while their urgent physical needs are met.
Reflections from Our Recent Site Visit to Kenya
At the end of last year, our founder had the profound opportunity to travel to Kenya, visit the center firsthand, and spend quality time with the children. Seeing their smiling faces and experiencing their growth was a powerful reminder of why we do this work.
However, a firsthand visit also brings new realities to light. As the children grow, their needs evolve. While the younger children are thriving in primary school, there is a pressing, urgent need for the older youth who are completing high school. To break the cycle of poverty permanently, these young adults need a clear path toward self-sufficiency and career development.
Our Simple Goals for This Year: Sustaining and Expanding
As we look at the year ahead, our mission remains deeply focused, practical, and urgent. We have set two clear goals:
-
Sustain the Monthly Feeding Program: We will continue our foundational monthly commitment to provide consistent food and water donations so no child at the center goes to bed hungry.
-
Fund Polytechnic and Technical School Education: We are expanding our focus to sponsor high school graduates, ensuring they can attend technical schools and polytechnics to learn practical, marketable trades that secure their futures.
How You Can Stand With Us Today
We cannot do this work alone. When the road gets difficult, it is your partnership that keeps us moving forward. If you are wondering how you can help us achieve these goals, there are three practical ways to take action:
-
Partner Financially: Your donations directly buy food, clean water, and fund polytechnic tuition for our graduates.
-
Share Our Mission: Help us expand our reach by sharing this blog post on social media and telling your friends and faith communities about our work.
-
Keep Us in Your Prayers: Pray for our team, for Mary and her staff, and for the strength to never give up when things get hard.
Once again, thank you so much for your continued support. Together, we are turning active faith into tangible hope.
